Course Description:

Electrical 5 is designed to give technicians a comprehensive understanding of the  Vansco Multiplex System as installed on New Flyer Xcelsior XN40 transit buses.  Students will learn the components, operation, and programming of the Vansco  VMM1615 modules, PLC ladder logic, J1939 CAN network architecture, and New Flyer  Unigraphics Electrical System Drawings. The course features hands-on lab activities on  an actual transit bus, using VMM software, the DPS70 Instrument Panel, and printed  documentation to perform real-world diagnostics and repairs.

Course Duration

4-Day Instructor-Led Course

Course Learning Objectives

  • Identify and locate the components of the Vansco VMM1615 multiplex system, including module nodes, connectors, BUSBAR power supplies, and diagnostic  LEDs
  • Explain the operation of the SAE J1939 CAN 1 network, including cable construction, terminating resistors, stub lengths, and drain wire grounding  requirements
  • Interpret VMM1615 inputs (digital, analog, and frequency) and outputs (high-side, low-side, and solid-state relay), including fault detection and circuit protection  features
  • Read and navigate Vansco PLC ladder logic diagrams, including AND/OR logic, active/inactive states, timers, flags, logs, and J1939 messages
  • Read and use New Flyer Unigraphics Electrical System Drawings to trace VMM power and ground circuits, J1939 CAN 1 network cables, and I/O assignments
  • Apply structured troubleshooting techniques using Vansco troubleshooting flowcharts, VMM1615 diagnostic LEDs, and electrical system drawings to  diagnose system faults
  • Connect a laptop to the VMM software via DLA adapter or DDL connector to query VMM modules, view I/O status, force inputs/outputs, and upload/download  ladder logic files
  • Use the Parker Vansco DPS70 Instrument Panel to monitor system operation, view VMM I/O, access ladder logic in real time, and diagnose active and  historical faults

Course Benefits

Upon completion, technicians will have the knowledge and hands-on skills to confidently  diagnose and repair the Vansco Multiplex System on New Flyer transit buses. They will  be able to leverage ladder logic, electrical system drawings, VMM software, and the  DPS70 Instrument Panel together as an integrated diagnostic toolkit — reducing  diagnostic time, improving repair accuracy, and minimizing bus downtime. Technicians  will leave with a clear understanding of how the system is programmed to operate,  enabling them to work more independently and effectively in real-world maintenance  environments.
