Course Description:

Electrical 3 is designed to give technicians fundamental knowledge and troubleshooting  techniques for powertrain control and CAN J1939 communication networks. The course  covers J1939 protocols, powertrain interface, gateways, and data logging, with hands on lab activities demonstrating how to perform diagnosis and repairs on communication  networks using an actual transit bus.

Course Learning Objectives 

  • Identify types of networks and understand network cable construction
  • Recognize and work with J1939 network components, pins/terminals, diagnostic  connectors, and gateway modules 
  • Read and interpret Electrical System Drawings (ESD) to locate J1939 network  nodes and connections 
  • Use a DMM to connect to a diagnostic interface, identify normal network  readings, and diagnose network faults 
  • Use an oscilloscope to diagnose network faults, interpret normal patterns, and  troubleshoot based on oscilloscope readings 

Course Benefits 

Upon completion, technicians will have a solid foundation in diagnosing and repairing  CAN J1939 communication networks. They will be equipped to confidently use both  DMMs and oscilloscopes to identify and resolve network faults, improving their ability to  maintain and troubleshoot complex powertrain control systems on transit buses.

Electrical 1: Electrical Fundamentals

Electrical 1 is designed to build and strengthen a technician’s foundational electrical skills and proficiency with the digital multimeter. The course covers core electrical fundamentals including, electron theory, electromagnetism, electrical circuits, and basic formulas.

Electrical 2: Electrical Circuit Diagnosis

Electrical 2 is an advanced course designed to improve technicians’ ability to diagnose electrical circuits in bus electronic management systems, with a focus on alternative-fuel vehicles. Students work with real vehicle schematics and perform hands-on lab exercises that simulate real-world troubleshooting scenarios.
