Electrical 1 is designed to build and strengthen a technician’s foundational electrical skills and proficiency with the digital multimeter. The course covers core electrical fundamentals including, electron theory, electromagnetism, electrical circuits, and basic formulas.

Electrical 1 is designed to build and strengthen a technician’s foundational electrical skills and proficiency with the digital multimeter. The course covers core electrical fundamentals including, electron theory, electromagnetism, electrical circuits, and basic formulas. Students will work through hands-on activities focused on series and parallel circuit construction, voltage drop measurement, and systematic diagnostic techniques, preparing them for advanced electrical coursework and the diagnosis and repair of alternatively fueled transit vehicles.

2-4 hours online over a 2-week period
Course Learning Objectives
- Define electricity and apply basic electrical principles, including voltage, current, resistance, and Ohm’s Law
- Recognize electrical hazards and demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of electrical tools and components
- Identify and describe the function of fundamental electrical components including resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, transistors, relays, fuses, and circuit breakers
- Differentiate between series, parallel, and series-parallel circuits and analyze their behavior
- Use a digital multimeter to accurately measure voltage, current, and resistance in electrical circuits
- Describe transit battery types, perform maintenance and testing procedures, and diagnose common battery faults
- Identify components of the starting and charging systems and diagnose and repair related issues
- Read and interpret transit wiring diagrams, including common symbols and notations
- Identify wiring harness types and demonstrate proper installation, repair, and troubleshooting techniques
- Identify sensors and actuators used in transit systems and diagnose common failures
- Use scan tools and code readers to retrieve and interpret diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
- Apply a step-by-step diagnostic procedure to identify and resolve common electrical problems in transit systems
Course Benefits
